Week 4 Assignment Template: Reflecting on Your Skills, Goals, and Accomplishments

Part 1: About Me: Reflection on Goals, Strengths, and Areas of Growth

Answer the following questions in your own words to capture how you see yourself in terms of values, aspirations, key qualities, goals, strengths, and areas of growth:

1. What are your values, motivations, or aspirations?

I like being honest in anything I get involved in because it helps me accomplish my goals easily. Secondly, I like being patient and, at the same time, loyal because it allows me not to give up on anything that I have started until I get the end outcomes. What makes me stick to my values are the results that I get from anything I get involved in.

2. What are some of your main personal, academic, and professional goals? From a tender age, my plans have always been to buy a piece of land and build a house for my parents. On top of helping my parent, I have always wished to have my own home and a car. Academically, my dream is to acquire a bachelor’s degree with an average grade of above eighty and later enroll for a master’s degree, enabling me to secure better jobs that guarantee a better life. I also dream of being an internationally recognized author after completing my academics.

3. What are some of your strength areas? Think about the top 2–3 skills you would advertise yourself, or consider what others come to you for advice. I have abilities to resolve conflicts that may arise in class or outside, where individuals with some differences come to me for help before they report their issues to the administration. Secondly, I have high skills in solving computer-related problems that have accompanied me throughout my life due to my love for electronic equipment. Lastly, I am good at identifying errors that individuals can have committed when writing their academic work. Many students send me their academic work so that I can identify some mistakes they may have committed when writing. Having done numerous proofreading tasks has enabled me to identify common mistakes that most people commit when writing and cannot be identified easily.

4. What are some areas you would like to grow and improve in? I am not a good communicator when presenting content before a large group of people. Hence I would like to work on my communication skills to be at their best. Secondly, I would like to continue growing my abilities to develop stories that individuals can relate to. Coming up with stories that individuals can relate to will help me accomplish my dream of becoming an author. Lastly, I would like my listening skills to be at their best because, at times, I cannot pay attention to what is being said to me.

Part 2: Accomplishment Statements

Accomplishments don’t have to be as large as climbing the top of Mount Everest or starting your own company. We accomplish many things that have meaning every day. For example, perhaps you organized volunteers for your school’s food drive or made an extremely profitable sale. Or, if you’re more advanced in your career, perhaps you’ve received a promotion or special recognition.

Review the Accomplishment Categories to help you identify two accomplishments from work, school, volunteering, or other activities and practice communicating them using the formats below. Your Two Accomplishment Statements Using Brainstorming Format

Step 1: Write two accomplishment statements using the brainstorming format: Challenge, Action, Result, and Details, which is explained below.

Challenge What was the situation, problem, or requirement?

[Example of response from someone with retail management experience: An increase in customer complaints about the helpfulness of staff.]

Action What specific actions did you take to resolve or meet the challenge?

[Example: Developed a new training program for staff, got approval from district manager, and once approved implemented it with a regular review process.]

Result What benefit was created in specific and measurable terms? (Be sure to tie results to the organization’s goals when possible.)

[Example: After three months, customer complaints decreased.]

Details What clarifying details, such as numbers or percentages, can provide context? (Consider answering how many, how much, how long, or how often.)

[Example: Previously, customer complaints averaged four per week. After three months, complaints averaged one or fewer per week.]

Accomplishment Statement #1: Write your accomplishment statement, in your own words, using the brainstorming format in the boxes below.

Challenge An increased school dropout due to drugs and substance abuse.
Action Offering free counseling to the affected student and incorporating life skills in every subject.
Result The number of school dropouts due to substance abuse had reduced after two months, and many students who were using drugs had begun to reform.
Details In the first two weeks, only four school dropout cases were reported. While after two months, only two students had dropped out of school.

Accomplishment Statement #2: Write your accomplishment statement in your own words, using the brainstorming format in the boxes below.

Challenge Discrimination against children living with disabilities at school leading them to commit suicide.
Action Educating students on the importance of accepting people living with disabilities without discriminating against them.
Result For the result to be seen, it took five months to notice a reduction in suicidal cases among children living with disabilities.
Details During the five months, only two cases were reported, and students had started interacting with others who were disabled.

Your Two Concise Accomplishments Statements Using Résumé Format

Step 2: The two accomplishment statements you wrote in Step 1 above will help you write your two accomplishment statements concisely using either of the two résumé format options below. (Note: you will not be completing a résumé).

· Résumé Format Option 1: Result + action + brief description with clarifying details.

· Example: Decreased customer complaints from three per week to one or fewer per week by training staff and implementing a regular review process.

· Résumé Format Option 2: Action + brief description with clarifying details + results.

· Example: Trained retail staff in customer-service techniques and implemented a regular review process, decreasing customer complaints from three per week to one or fewer per week.

Accomplishment Statement #1: Write your accomplishment statement using either résumé format option, in the box below:

Accomplishment Statement #1 Using Résumé Format Option 1 or 2
School dropout cases due to substance abuse were reduced from four students to two by offering free counseling to affected students and life skills to the rest.

Accomplishment Statement #2: Write your accomplishment statement using either résumé format option in the box below:

Accomplishment Statement #2 Using Résumé Format Option 1 or 2
Suicidal cases among children living with disabilities were reduced to two cases achieved by educating other students on the importance of accepting them.

Part 3: Reflect on Your Experiences Reflect on Your Experiences & Practices for the Future

1. How has reflecting on your goals, strengths, areas of growth, and accomplishments been valuable for you?

Identifying where I have reached when it comes to personal development has been of importance because I have identified areas that need improvement. Also, I have seen what I have done perfectly, and it will enable me to stick to them so that I cannot lose them.

2. What are 1 –2 ways you can build in a regular practice of reflection that will help you reach your future goals? Continuously review my set goals and make changes when needed.

Looking for someone to mentor me so that I can have the motivation to stick to my goals without giving up.

Connection between Accomplishments and 10 Skills

3. Identify two of the 10 Skills (from the Skill Definition Table) that have helped you reach the accomplishments you listed in Part 2. Briefly explain how. Problem-solving and result-oriented. I took my time to look at what was the cause of the problem and what would be the best solution and wanted to follow up until the outcomes were seen.

4. Do you feel more confident expressing your accomplishments to an employer after writing your achievements in a résumé-appropriate style, which you did in Part 2? Briefly explain.

Yes, because it will help show that I can identify a problem and find a solution to it without giving up, which most employers require.
