Identify and discuss the dramatic structure elements of The Container by Claire Bayley. This is a story of a group of asylum seekers being smuggled across Europe inside a shipping container, seeking refuge in England. This production, revived following a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Festival, was captured by Digital Theatre live inside a real shipping container parked outside the Young Vic Theatre. With an audience of only 28, all locked inside the container in the dark with the actors, the production was directed by Tom Wright, and met with much critical acclaim. ” (DigitalTheatre.com). The genre of the play is Melodrama because of the drama that it involves. This play puts an emphasis on suspense and action that is used throughout the entirety of the play. Although there was no music that was used to heighten the mood during the play their use of villains and heroes make the audience sit on the edge of their seats the whole time.
The three characters that stuck out the most to me while watching The Container was the businessman, the daughter, and the thin man that I am going to refer to as the boss because he really took control of the group in the container of the truck. The businessman is the first person that I really noticed because of his attitude and stuck-up mentality. The businessman is the protagonist of the performance because he was the reason that a lot of the drama revolved around him especially every time the truck came to a stop, and he would not stop talking. The daughter on the truck was the one character that did not speak very much so I feel as though she was a stock character because she did not develop a unique character. The other man that acted like the boss of the container was the antagonist because he was the chief and main character throughout the play (ACT III Terms).
The exposition of The Container is the difficulty that people have to go through to get out of the bad situations that they are going through in different countries. When watching this it allows the audience to realize that the life that citizens of the United States, like us, have is nice compared to others. When the man made a comment about trying to get to his baby it really opens up the eyes of those in the audience with families that some people have to really fight to be with their family because they get taken away from them (The Container Video). The way that the entire performance was placed in the container of a truck allows for everyone to see how it is and how when someone gets sick or goes to the bathroom everyone else is able to smell it and they have to be around it for days on end.
The climax is the highest point of the performance and it occurred when the driver came into the container of the truck with fresh water and told the passengers about the difficulty he was having getting them to England. Following that money was brought into the conversation and the driver told them that he needed it, or he would stop and let them out on the side of the road for them to get where they want to go on their own. After the driver left the container the man tried to collect the money but was struggling to get the money from the mother and daughter as well as the lady that came in the container sick. He began to get frustrated asking for anything that costed enough to get the driver the money he needs. The sick lady pulled out a gun and began pointing it at the older businessman.
Like I said previously, by seeing this play it allowed for the audience to see the way that people have to live in other places in the world. Plays like this allow for people to see the different cultures around the world as well.
If the play was to continue at the place that it ended I think that the characters were at the stop where the train was, but I believe that they were about to get caught. I think that it was too quiet for them to be transitioning onto a train, so I think they were about to go through a look of tragic things and have to go back where they came from.
