DISCUSSION #1:

Discuss an application of data mining. How does it solve business problems? List of areas where data mining is widely used includes: financial data analysis, retail and telecommunication industries, science and engineering, intrusion detection and prevention, recommender systems.

The student will research the applications of data mining and write an essay to answer the below questions: 1. Describe the application of data mining in one industry. 2. Discuss how this application of data mining solved business problems.

1. What are the use cases of analytics in business? 2. Discuss how to draw conclusions from the analytics methods.

In Ryan’s article he argues that the use of big data by powerful Agricultural Technical Providers (ATP) will likely be used for manipulative purposes against individual farmers by undercutting land prices and confiscating their lands. He gives examples of this through five power types: manipulative, seductive, leadership, coercive, and forceful power.

Examine one of those power types which Mark Ryan describes and how Agricultural Technical Providers through the use of big data could abuse their power, and answer the questions:

1. What do you believe could be done by individuals and governments to prevent such abuse?

2. If these Agricultural Technical Providers followed social responsibility principles, could such abuse be mitigated or prevented? Why or why not?
