It seems that everyone is biased in one way or another. Is bias a product of human nature? Why or why not?

It seems that everyone is biased in one way or another. Is bias a product of human nature? Why or why not?

Remember to respond to two peers while being respectful of and sensitive to their viewpoints. Consider advancing the discussion in the following ways:

· Post an article, video, or visual related to bias or stereotype to reinforce a peer’s idea or challenge them to see their point from a different perspective.

· Paraphrase something from the original post. Then consider asking a question or sharing your personal experience.

PEER 1-BB

· In your own words, how would you define implicit bias?

I define implicit bias as a form of emotions and behaviors that automatically affect a person’s behavior towards another person.

· It seems that everyone is biased in one way or another. Is bias a product of human nature? Why or why not?

Implicit bias is a product of human nature because, we all have our own beliefs and emotions when it comes to other people. Our environment impacts our beliefs. In the TED talk by Dushaw Hockett we have these attuites and behaviors that we attach to subjects. Like in his video when you hear subsidized housing, a lot of people think unconsciously think of poor, drugs, and violent crime area.

· What is the role of positive and negative stereotypes in group relations?

The role sterotypes within a group relation can have both positive and negative roles. Having those negative sterotypes can turn a person into wanting to create something positive out of, and drive them to do even more greatness.

· Identify a population for which you have a positive stereotype and describe the stereotype (e.g., all Canadians are nice and polite). How could having a positive stereotype generate a negative reaction from a person of that in-group?

I have a positive stereotype for First Responders which is, they will always be there for others, always willing to give a helping hand regardless of the person’s background. But the negative reaction from that is, people who work as first responders do not have much of a life outside of work due to the demand of the job (long hours).

· How does the concept of stereotypes apply to any of the following programmatic course themes

I believe stereotyping relates to ethics and social justice, as people already have these ideas whether it be conscienly or unconsciously which can greatly impact their views on a lot of issues and can cause behavioral changes.

PEER2-SW

· In your own words, how would you define implicit bias?

I would define implicit bias in my own words as having an idea about someone or something without realizing it.

· It seems that everyone is biased in one way or another. Is bias a product of human nature? Why or why not?

We heard in the TED talk about how our environments impact everything we do including our ideas and beliefs. I think that bias is more an outcome of our environment than human nature. When Dushaw gave the four different words of government, corporate, subsidized housing, and suburbs and asked the audience to call out what they think of when that word comes to mind. I’m sure some of us could relate to what the audience called out for each word. Our environment affects us, but our environments can change. I think that Dushaw explaining how he used to work for the government and corporate america, as well as how he grew up in subsidized housing but now lives in the suburbs shows that you don’t have to be stuck in one environment forever (TEDx Talks, 2017).

· What is the role of positive and negative stereotypes in group relations?

Negative stereotypes bring a group down while positive relations bring a group up. For example, in our textbook reading this week we read about how when Asian American females were asked biographical questions relating to their gender before taking a math test. They were also reminded of their Asian identity. Those with negative stereotypes didn’t perform well on the test but those with positive stereotypes did well (Myers, 2018).

· Identify a population for which you have a positive stereotype and describe the stereotype (e.g., all Canadians are nice and polite). How could having a positive stereotype generate a negative reaction from a person of that in-group?

A population that I have a positive stereotype for is our service men and women. I see first-hand with my husband, even though it’s only a fraction of what he actually deals with, how demanding and how much they truly sacrifice to protect this country. A negative reaction to that is that service members sacrifice a lot and get all these benefits and therefore make a lot of money. When in reality that isn’t the case at all.

· How does the concept of stereotypes apply to any of the following programmatic course themes:

· Self-care

· Social justice

· Emotional intelligence

· Career connections

· Ethics

I think that implicit bias relates to the programmatic theme of social justice. I think that even though implicit bias is something were unaware of that we need to be better as a society and be more willing to fight for social justice. We shouldn’t have racism in our world anymore and we shouldn’t have anyone being discriminated against. Social justice is always going to be a fight worth winning because everyone deserves the same rights and opportunities.
