Math DQR Week 5
Name at least one thing that you really enjoy about the class (come on, there must be something!) and at least one improvement that could make this class even better. Feel free to editorialize!
Also, this is a good time to make a “keep-quit-start” resolution.
• What are you doing to help yourself learn in this class that you are going to keep doing because it’s working?
• What are you doing that is hindering you from learning in this class that you are going to quit doing?
• What do you think will help you improve your learning in this class that you are going to start doing?
Then, respond to 2 of your classmates in substantive postings.

Class,
To be completely honest with everyone I still hate math. I thought online math class would be super simple and easy for me to pay less attention to while I took some other classes. I was very wrong. Although the course material is not all that hard, there is no way around the time needed to complete it. This past week, functions week, made that clearer to me. I have made it to the point where there are more letters than numbers in my math and I am not a fan. However, I am learning everything that needs to be learned throughout the week. The setup of videos, workbooks and then quiz really makes things easier. I found myself having a few unanswered questions this week and referred to some external sources. I think that the study helpers should be placed somewhere throughout the video to take you right where you need to go. Maybe have a video that gives a better explain or more help with a specific topic would be beneficial as well. I use ALOT of scarp paper when working through the videos and workbooks. I will try to find an alternative method to working the problems out. Does anyone have any suggestions to what they might do instead of wasting a bunch of paper? Math online is nothing like I expected it to be however, it has not been all that bad and I look forward to keeping up the pace for these next few weeks.

Good morning,
I can’t believe we are at the midway point already. I thought this course would be a lot more painful than it has been. I enjoy the class’s ability to do lessons and tests ahead of schedule. I have been about a week ahead now for the past few weeks, and that is a great stress relief for me to know I can take a day or two off and I am still ahead. One thing I would improve would be fixing the mistakes in the video lessons. I know there are not many, but a few times, the narrator said the wrong thing and kept going with the lesson. He then corrected it on the screen but did not mention the mistake. I’m sure that is not an easy fix to recreate the video, but it’s frustrating when you are attempting the problem as he is narrating and he says the wrong thing, and you are trying to figure out how he got to that isn’t even correct. It didn’t happen many times, but it is the only thing I would improve on in the class.
The thing I am doing to help myself learn that I will keep doing is taking good notes on the quizzes and workbook. I take a lot of time on those to ensure I have good examples of how to do a particular problem. This has helped me thus far in the class.
One thing I am doing that hinders me from learning is rushing through the video lessons. I watch them once and move on. I’m sure I would get more out of them if I watched them multiple times, but I learn better from practicing problems and not listening to someone explaining the problem. If I see the start point and the solution, I can figure out how to get there on my own. It may not be the most efficient way to get to a solution, but it is the way my brain will understand it.
The method that I feel will help me improve my learning is finding more problems on my own that are in the different lessons. Like I said before, I learn best from working problems, so I need to do a lot of them until they just become muscle memory.
Good luck to everyone in the next couple of weeks. I hope we all do well and get through the last part of college algebra.
