Which is more important to an organization, physical security or cybersecurity, and why? Provide examples that demonstrate the weight of value an organization would have for one over the other, where physical outweighs cyber and where cyber outweighs physical.

Physical security and cyber security are big topics within organizations on how to keep themselves safe. Physical security is the actual means of keeping something safe such as locks or ID badges whereas cyber security is the measures an organization takes to protect information accessible through a network or system is protected. “Physical security keeps people out of their offices, but cyber security prevents them from getting in” (NSTEC, n.d.), it takes two to be completely safe. But in the question of which is better, they both have their pros. Physical security benefits are that it denies unauthorized access to buildings, equipment, or resources as well as prevents damage. Examples of what physical security is best fitted for would be theft, espionage, or terrorist attacks. Cyber security is the opposite of physical security and would be useless in those types of attacks. Cyber security benefits from protecting the networks from unauthorized access to sensitive data through the networks by use of firewalls, intrusion detection systems, cryptography, and other security rules and policies. As far as which one is more important than the other, I believe that both carry the same amount of importance and that organizations need to understand that they need to implement both security measures if they want their employees and their network to be safe.

Hello Professor Ligon and Class,
Physical security and cybersecurity are both greatly needed for the protection of an organization’s technologies and sensitive data. Physical security is strongly needed because an intruder may have a much easier time stealing technology or by simply plugging a malicious device into a computer in order act in a malicious way. Although lack of physical security would make an attack exponentially easier, I would have to say that cybersecurity is still more important. This does not mean that an organization needs to spend minimal time on physical security, it just means that cybersecurity has many more entry points for intruders to use to attack a company. For instance, the cybersecurity aspect even controls part of the physical security aspect through the use of anything that uses some type of digital access control. This includes how computers handle smart card data and how they protect other physical security aspects, such as video surveillance. At the same time, cybersecurity needs to be in charge of and successful at protecting everything IT related, ranging from network servers, to web applications, to host computers. This means that much thought needs to be put into physical security but even more thought needs to be put into cyber security.

I would say to answer this question it would all come down to the type of organization or the size of organization. For large organizations, I would say they are both important as protecting physical documents and the people are important and so cybersecurity would also be important to protect the digital infrastructure. In my opinion, I would say in my opinion, that physical security would be more important because when a physical breach has occurred it could also facilitate a cyber-attack. Physical security can be breached by a cyber-attack by accessing physical security devices through unsecure Wi-Fi networks, IoT devices or another weakness. One thing that can be done on a physical security level is by implementing security entrances. Their four categories of security entrances ranging from crowd control, deterrent, detection, and prevention. Best practices for security entrances are by performing routine third-party penetration testing, lock down the control panel to authorized users, and limit the number of users that have access to the security system.
